Eco-sustainability challenges for

the Biz Programme!

What are the eco-sustainability challenges which can be solved by tourism SMEs* and startups?

This form is to discover the possible eco-sustainability problems in the tourism value chain. The replies will be further investigated and analyzed by the Consortium Partners in order to select the eco-challenges to be cracked by the matches (1 tourism SME* + 1 startup) created during the matchmaking events!

The tourism SMEs and the startups innovators will work together in the TANDEM to deliver a Plan of action, resolving the sustainability issues.

(*) Tourism SMEs includes: a) hotels and similar accommodation; b) holiday and other short-stay accommodation; c) camping grounds, recreational vehicle parks and trailer parks; d) travel agency, tour operator reservation services and related activities.

What's the sustainability challenges which can be solves by SMEs and (tourism) startups?

Energy conservation measures:

renewable energy programs (i.e., solar and wind power)

energy-efficient appliances and equipment

controlling guest room energy consumption by using digital thermostats

use of energy star-qualified products

motion sensors that automatically turn lights off in low-traffic areas

reflective glass or triple-glazed windows

energy-efficient light bulbs (LED) and depending on daylight rather than artificial light when cleaning vacant dirty rooms

Energy-efficient air conditioning and air-based heat pump appliances

Outside heating and air conditioning appliances

Procurement of electricity from a renewable electricity supplier

Water conservation measures

water-efficient devices and appliances (e.g., using low-flow toilets and showerheads and installing infrared-activated faucets)

towel/bed linen reuse programs

fixing leaks in toilets and baths regularly

watering grass and plants early in the morning and late at night to limit evaporation

recycling the grey water (water from washing vegetables and fruits) for grass irrigation

monitoring the water consumption in each department to track usage

Waste Management Measures

separating wastes by using clearly labeled containers and colored bins for collecting recyclables

purchasing products containing recycled content

collecting organic kitchen wastes separately for soil composting

purchasing food items and cleaning chemicals in bulk

adopting a donation program (donating food leftovers and linens to charity)

grinding the remaining guest soaps to use as laundry detergent

The urgent need to implement and develop the precise implementation of fast food safety evaluation methodologies

The immediacy on the response to the consumer's demand in the changing world

Management Measures

Internal Management: taking into account sustainability principles in the management of human resources, office supplies and production of printed materials

Product development and management: planning tours and selecting holiday package components that minimise environmental, economic and social impacts

Contracting with suppliers: integrating sustainability principles into the selection criteria and

service agreements of suppliers

Customer relations: guaranteeing privacy, health and safety standards, and providing customers with information on responsible behaviour and sustainability issues at their destinations

Relations with destinations: supporting destinations stakeholders’ efforts to address sustainability issues and financially contributing to conservation and development projects

Mobility Management Measures:

Adopt sustainable mobility solutions as a benefit for enhancing the tourism product.

Increase tourist experiences combining sustainable mobility modes, i.e. cycling/pilgrimage, walking/architecture

Increase the level and source of information about sustainable mobility options (before and during the journey)

Create synergies between sustainable mobility modes, i.e. on PT card offer discount for bike sharing, on bike sharing card offer discount for electric car rental.

Big data analytic tools for collecting and sharing data between tourism and transport operators.

Including the upgrading of sustainable mobility modes and infrastructures in the destination strategic planning.
